For the next few months, I will choose a card from the African American Tarot deck as a prompt for my blog posts. Let’s see what spiritual insight I come up with!

King of Chalices + 6 of Wands

When’s the last time you were emotionally balanced? When’s the last time you were at peace? Think about it. I’ll wait. Has it been a while? You are not alone. 13% of Americans are on antidepressants. Many who are not on psychiatric meds are using a number of other means to dull symptoms. How do we stop the madness? How do we stop the inner turmoil?

Rising above emotion is the key.  Many of us carry patterns in our emotional responses. We’ve been responding to the same experiences with the same thinking which leads to the same tired emotions. Some time ago I began to study my mind. I wanted to know why I felt the way I did. What I recognized almost instantly is that my negative, angry thinking would cause negative emotion. It was an Aha! moment for me. If I could avoid perpetuating negative, heavy thinking I could avoid the emotion that would inevitably follow. This my friends is emotional maturity. When a thought enters my field of consciousness I can say “No” and move on. If a thought continues to pop up I will not fight it because doing so is futile. I will just say “No” and divert my attention elsewhere. It takes practice. It takes awareness. The result of saying “No” to the same old tired thoughts/emotions is freedom. Get free.

Indulge the Senses

For the next few months, I will choose a card from the African American Tarot deck as a prompt for my blog posts. Let’s see what spiritual insight I come up with!

The Sun + Ace of Chalices + The Hanged Man

As I write this my birthday is approaching. Birthdays always present a paradox for me. I am excited to be approaching another year of life (god-willing). Yet, I am disappointed that I am not where I thought I would be by this age. Each year around this time I experience a sense of joy and mourning.

A year is passing away while another is coming into fruition. And so the cards have fallen with this message. Encouraging you, encouraging me to play, to get out and have fun. Life is not meant to be lived without enjoyment of the senses. The human experience offers us opportunities to smell sweet scents, to tantilize tastebuds, to touch and be touched, to hear beautiful melodies, to see the beauty of creation.

What a waste to squander this gift. Joy and indulgence of the senses injects a fresh sense of well being into the human experience. It flows into our lives and leaves behind a refreshed emotional landscape. In the place of stress, sadness, and striving we find peace.

This week’s message invites us to stop and smell the roses. Stop fighting and wishing things were different. Be still and see with the eyes of the heart. The eye which sees the truth, the truth that you are well. Now, get out and have some fun!!!

Choose Joy

For the next few months, I will choose a card from the African American Tarot deck as a prompt for my blog posts. Let’s see what spiritual insight I come up with!

10 of Wands & Knight of Chalices-Choose Joy

Sometimes in the midst of chasing our goals we forget the importance of choosing joy. We are ripping and running. The race leaves us weary and burdened by worry. Yet, we still push on. Attempting to catch that which eludes us. Money, love, and more material possessions. We want it all and so we push ourselves. We work and work and work. Work becomes our life. It becomes our everything. Work becomes that thing which is placed above all else. There is nothing more important than making money to buy things. In the end death comes and the money stays behind. Our bodies and all we know dissolve. We return home.

Before you return to the place from which you emerged, choose joy. Laugh, jump, play, sing. Dance, twirl, love, roll. Give your all to joy. Let it encase you. Let it wrap you tight. Wear your heart on your sleeve. Let your skin bask in the glow of moonlight. Wish on a star. Embrace playfulness. You deserve it!

It's a Celebration!

For the next few months, I will choose a card from the African American Tarot deck as a prompt for my blog posts. Let’s see what spiritual insight I come up with!

10 of Chalices-It’s a Celebration!

For months I lived with a roommate I didn’t particularly care for. He was passive aggressive and acted as if his word was law. Whenever I was alone in the space I felt free, light, and comfortable. Anytime he was home I avoided him. It was a very unpleasant way to live.

Throughout the duration of my stay I was looking for another place to live, which isn’t always easy in NYC. I searched and searched. Visiting apartment after apartment hoping to find a place that met my criteria. I was looking for a spot that was comfortable, peaceful, well-kept, affordable and pet-friendly.

One day I went to see a cute little place in Brooklyn. It was on the second floor of a private home right off the F train line. I could see myself living here in comfort. So I completed the application, gathered my documents and sent them off to the realtor. Finally! This was it. I had found my home.

Days passed and the realtor was unable to give me an answer on the status of the application. He indicated that the landlord was evasive because the current tenants were thinking about staying in the apartment after all. He asked that I give him a couple of days to sort things out. This place, though cute was not my home. I was disappointed. Yet, I was sure that it didn’t work out because it was not supposed to. It was not my time to move, even though I was eager to.

When the timing was right and only when the timing was right I was blessed with the opportunity to move into a beautiful place of my own. It is peaceful, pet-friendly, well-kept, and comfortable. It is everything that I’ve wanted!  And the bonus is that it has gorgeous hardwood floors. (I love hardwood floors!) At times the journey is long and arduous. Hold on. There will be cause to celebrate. Your time is coming.

Stop & Smell The Roses...

At times I move so quickly and I want so desperately those things which I do not yet possess, that I forget to enjoy the journey. I forget to enjoy and embrace the moments that I find myself in. I become so focused on where I want to be that I virtually ignore where I am. There is beauty in the moment. There is beauty in the moment. There is beauty in the moment. Never forget it.

The Turtle & The Crow

Turtle moved tentatively down the road. Towards the sun. He wanted to move faster. He always wanted to move faster. It didn’t matter that he was a turtle. He could see all of the wonderful things taking place down the road and that is where he wanted to be.

“Ugh”, Turtle sighed. “If only I could run like the others.” In the distance, Turtle could see a jubilee in progress. People were jumping, dancing, and laughing.

“At this rate, I will never make it there. The party will go on without me.” Turtle stated with a frown.

He walked and walked and walked. His progress was labored. Turtle thought of the jubilee and of all the fun he was missing. This angered him. “It is so unfair.” Turtle said. “Why should I be cursed with these stumpy legs?”

Turtle continued on his journey. All the way, feeling angry and sorry for himself. In the distance ribbons danced in the wind, bubbles floated up into the atmosphere, children played.

Turtle was so distracted by the jubilee that he failed to see the beauty that surrounded him. He was blinded by thoughts of the future. All the while ignoring the gifts of the present.

To the left and right of Turtle there were endless fields of lavender flowers. Blades of glowing green grass topped with fragrant flowers. He could not see this beauty for he was mesmerized by what lied ahead.

Turtle walked and walked and walked in a state of total despondency.

Crow landed in front of turtle and squawked “Where are you headed Turtle?”. “To the jubilee.” Turtle answered hurriedly. “Oh", squawked Crow, “Have you noticed the lavender flowers that are in bloom? Don’t they smell delightful?”

“I have no time for such silliness Crow, I must get to the jubilee.” replied the turtle.

Crow’s smile faded as she replied “I see. Turtle did it ever occur to you that this place is where you are supposed to be. In this moment, on this road, speaking to me. This is all part of the journey and you mustn’t ignore or neglect it. For it is as important as the destination.”

Turtle stopped. He looked at Crow. He looked to his left and then to his right.

“Perhaps you are correct Crow. I shall stop and smell the flowers.” Turtle responded before disappearing into the field of purple and green.
